Who are allies@mit?

We are a group of people who believe that the MIT community is enriched by the inclusion of lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgendered people. We aim to avoid heterosexist assumptions, be more open-minded in our daily speech and actions, and question traditional gender identities and sexualities. We are "allied" with the LBGT community in the struggle to confront and combat prejudice and injustice by educating ourselves and those around us. We believe that promoting the ideals of equality and acceptance makes our campus a safer and stronger community for everyone.

Why t-shirts?

This photo is from the allies@mit t-shirt campaign held on Friday, April 7, 2006 (this past Campus Preview Weekend). The t-shirts were meant to make a visual statement to the MIT community, helping raise awareness of LBGT issues and demonstrate our commitment to fostering a more welcoming community. The phrase "assume nothing" is meant to challenge us to defer judgment, spark conversation and encourage us all to learn more about each other.
